true story

I hit a snake on the road the other day
it was lying there coiled up in the shade

(stupid serpent-snakes like the sun)

I didn't do it on purpose-I didn't know what it was
until my mom screamed, then I knew my faux pas

(alas, my first roadkill)

I have to admit I wasn't sorry at all
I did not cry or sob or bawl,

(actually I laughed)

I know that you animal lovers will hate me
buy what can I say? It was a sight to see.

(I hate snakes.)

Dedicated to my mom who was in the passenger seat and who hates snakes more than I do.  We had a good laugh.

(this is a first draft of something I wrote this morning...what do you guys thing?)

There is a land where rakes are “hitters”
bouncy balls are reusable bombs
sticks are machine guns
umbrellas are shields
swords are made of plastic

where death is only 10 seconds long
and then you come back to life,
where you tell your enemies when a
surprise attack is coming,
where a play house and a
shed makes a fortress
where an army is made of one,
sound effects are made on
the spot.

eventually they'll forget
that rakes were once deadly
and bouncy balls could kill
that sticks could shoot bullets
and umbrellas once saved
them from harm
and plastic could make a

Because death is for
a told on surprise attack would fail
a play house and a shed do not a
fortress make
and an army of one wouldn't last
very long
because the sounds are louder
than they can imagine.

Because real life isn't a fantasy.

Love is such an insufficient word
compared to the affection God has for

I wrote this on one of those super hot April days we had this spring (it looks a lot longer double spaced....:).

It’s  hot
90o hot
My arms stick to the desk
My legs stick to the chair
It’s hot
90o hot
My hands sweat just holding the ball
I shoot it any way-
It’s hot
90o hot
The wind blows, no relief
The sun beats, no relief
It’s hot
90o hot
It’s April.
